Joined the U.S. Army and have been deployed and PCS'd several times. Been trying to get control of my finances and getting rid of debt. Preparing myself for retirement which is still 25 years away and counting down. My goal is to get rid of debt, fund my retirement, and live my life happily.

Short and Long Term Goals:
[X] Come up with do-able 5 year consumer debt free plan
[_] Start Birthday/Christmas fund ($100 total)
[_] Pay off Emblem credit card
[_] Start emergency fund
[_] Start putting money in Roth IRA
[_] Get rid of 50lbs and attain 12% bodyfat

My Student Loans

Student loans are loathed and not just by me. I have a lot of student loan debt but I am also using the tuition assistance as well in order to offset the usage of more student loans.

But the past damage is done. So I have to pay it off. I won't start paying it off until I pay off my other debt first.

But after looking at the debt and the fact that the other debt will be paid off, I'm looking at about three years of being able to pay it off!

A total of 7 years until I am completely debt free! And that's the MAXIMUM amount of time it would take.

I'm so excited!

I have a similar amount as you due in student loans. I loathe them too and can't wait to pay them off! I admire your enthusiasm

I'm puzzled by the hostile reaction to student loans. People don't seem to fret about borrowing ridiculous sums to buy a car which is a depreciating asset but resent the university credentials that will pay off for their entire career even if you do something totally unrelated. That degree opens doors. Do you feel the taxpayers should contribute more than one half of your eduction that they currently pay if you went to a State school?

If you were in charge of higher education, how would you fund those applicants whose families didn't have the sums required?

I'm not exactly hostile towards the loans, just the sum of which they accumulate because the tuition is so high. there are actually schools that have free tuition.
